Nobody ever accused Big Tek of being too frivolous or upbeat. The large round tektite gome can usually be found grumbling and sulking. He's not too smart, either. Wullie would say, "He's aboot as smairt as a clootie dumpling... and no' quite as good looking!"
But Big Tek is a formidable enemy. He is large, round, with an incredibly tough outer layer as hard as metal. when he pulls his arms and legs inside he can launch himself like a large bowling ball rolling at great speed to smash anything that gets in his way. And if he holds a metal bar in his hand he can generate enough heat from inside his body to turn the metal bar red hot. We first meet Big Tek underneath Edinburgh Castle in the third book of the Blackhope Scaurtrilogy. He bears a grudge against all humans. As he explains angrily to Hadley.
"Yoose have used me and abused me for aboot five hundred years. It wasnae enough that ye dug me up and tried tae smash me and melt me. You've used me as a cannonball, and dropped me off castle walls. and then, when you started re-building parts of this fancy castle of yours, you stuck me intae the walls and surrounded me wi' slabs of granite and sandstone. You built the walls right on top of me. I've been stuck inside for three hundred and twenty four years listening to your soldiers cursing and your pipers playing above my head until I thought I'd go mad."
When Wullie fights Big Tek one-on-one it is not a battle that Wullie can win by strength alone. And although Wullie seems to get the better of Big Tek in the end we never do hear what happened to the tektite gome at the end of Blackhope Scaur. Will he show up in a future story meaner and angrier than ever?
